About FCRE

FCRE was founded in 2002 by Charles E. “Snuffy” Myers, MD, a noted prostate cancer oncologist, scientist, and author, and his wife, Rose Sgarlat Myers, PT, PhD. Dr. Snuffy Myers began his focus on prostate cancer in 1989 after spending many years developing agents for cancer and HIV treatments at the National Cancer Institute.

Our Mission

The mission of the Foundation for Cancer Research and Education (FCRE) is to decrease the death rate from cancer while enhancing patient quality of life.  Our focus on prostate cancer research is a model for the treatment of other cancers and can reduce the frequency of heart attacks and strokes.  Our efforts in education are to acquaint the general public, cancer patients, and health care professionals with recent advances in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of prostate cancer.

Our Vision

FCRE envisions a future in which deaths from prostate cancer are greatly reduced among all populations.  We see a time in which advances in prevention, diagnosis, and treatment are readily available and employed.  FCRE advocates comprehensive cancer care for all patients, by which we mean understanding all the cancer treatment options available and combining them if necessary.  A comprehensive treatment program also includes the evaluation and treatment of cardiovascular disease, obesity, diabetes, or any other disease that affects overall health.

Our History

Charles E. “Snuffy” Myers, MD, a noted prostate cancer oncologist, scientist, and author, and his wife, Rose Sgarlat Myers, PT, PhD, a noted educator, founded FCRE in 2002.  Dr. Myers began his focus on prostate cancer in 1989 after spending many years developing agents for cancer and HIV treatments at the National Cancer Institute.  His research and clinical practice prompted him to develop novel ways of treating patients.  In 1999, Dr. Myers was diagnosed with prostate cancer.  This experience has directly affected how he approaches patient treatment and how he views prostate cancer education.  Both Snuffy and Rose’s professional and personal experiences led to a renewed commitment to serving people with cancer in a way that addresses both the patient’s overall health and his well-being.  The Foundation for Cancer Research and Education emerged from the focused culmination of these experiences.  We seek to deliver the latest information about current cancer treatments while also incorporating cutting edge research in developing innovative approaches to curing this disease.
